Ask Annabel

A Note on the Name

Though Ask Annabel resembles the name of one of her co-founders Annabel, there’s a story behind it: quite some time ago (in 2004), during one of our meetings, we decided it was time to think of a name for this new students’ organisation. During a lecture in women’s studies Annabel felt a bit lost in a pool of theories and started thinking of a name. Then ESTAfem rolled out, an acronym for Equality and Solidarity in Transgressive Action/feminism… Most members thought this name could work, and soon a logo consisting of a barcode was printed on t-shirts… At a party in Amsterdam, the group of ESTAfemmers often met with questions as to what the abbreviation on their t-shirts actually stood for. “Uhm… yes… something solidarity and action… I think…. Well, actually, why don’t you ask Annabel over there, she thought of it, so she can tell you exactly what it stands for!” This occurred a couple of times, after which one of the members proposed an alternative name for the students’ organisation; and thus, Ask Annabel was brought into being.
